The Lungs supply the body with oxygen gas by breathing in air. Without oxygen, most body cells live for only a few minutes. Cells use oxygen to break down food into energy, carbon dioxide gas, and water. By breathing out, the lungs remove carbon dioxide and water. This is called respiration, the process from which the Respiratory system gets it's name.
